I read that they had to bulldoze the cabin in order to make a Dominion supermarket store. I find it interesting when describing Smiths cabin location, Robert gourlay described "A vista opened through the woods into lake ontario" meaning that 41st street was once a very old path. About the excavation however, what would it take to execute another search of the area? Is there some kind of process you have to follow? <br />Over the past couple of months I have drenched myself in tons of local history of the south Etobicoke area, curious about every piece of abandoned architecture and mysterious areas, I have made it a personnal mission to take part of the recording our areas fascinating history. Throughout my research I have learned greatly about the Almont Hotel, the former psychiatric hospital grounds, the former long branch munitions factory where they produced the long branch lee enfield rifle and also the Long Branch Hotel or Sea Breeze Park. However there is much more to be learned. If there is anyway I could help out the cause I would be more than happy too.Ben Tobolanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3937309685082997818.post-71282047663282741032011-08-25T10:01:29.860-07:002011-08-25T10:01:29.860-07:00Today the province of Ontario announced that it is...Today the province of Ontario announced that it is helping the Conseil Scolaire Viamonde (French Public School Board) to secure the school. Financial details still remain to be worked out but it looks encouraging that what remains of Colonel Samuel Smith's house and artifacts will be protected for the future. According to the archaeological report from the dig in 1984 the house was bulldozed to demolish it resulting in most of the artifacts being found in the soil to the north behind the townhouse complex. It is possible that the foundations of the house are still there but it would require another excavation. The public school has been declared surplus by the Toronto District School Board. The public French Board would like to purchase the building for a French School but have not been successful to date in obtaining funding from the province. Should the purchase not go through the building could be sold to a private developer which could put the historic site at risk. The archaeological site has been registered with both the City of Toronto and the Province of Ontario.Michael Harrisonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15408473849110286556noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3937309685082997818.post-64558918761655201232011-08-22T23:45:09.633-07:002011-08-22T23:45:09.633-07:00Hey Michael, do you know the exact location of the...Hey Michael, do you know the exact location of the former Smith's cabin? I heard it was just south of lakeshore and west off Etobicoke creek, but then I heard it was demolished to make way for a dominion parking lot? Isn't that location described set in Marie Curtis park? Or was it destroyed by hurricane hazel?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
